SDHA Presents Approaches to Increase Security through Climate Resilience in the Makera Watershed

The Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Organization (SDHA) on 29th August 2019 presented results on the feasibility study on holistic and sustainable approaches to increase security through climate resilience in the Makera watershed located in Muhanga District, Southern Province.

The study was carried out by SDHA in partnership with Muhanga District, UK-ISARO  Organization, CORA foundation (UK) and IABM, the local agricultural cooperative operating the area.

Participants including District officials, local authority, IABM cooperative and partners attended and commended the outcome of the study.

The overall objective of this study was to provide an in-depth analysis of the link between climate change and food insecurity for smallholder farmers operating within Makera Watershed.

It is expected that the outcome of this study will provide strategic recommendations to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change within the Watershed.

The Makera watershed covers three sectors: Nyamabuye, Cyeza and Muhanga Sectors of Muhanga District, Southern Province. It covers an area of 647.7 Sq Kilometers. According to  topographic structure, the highest level of the elevation of the Makera watershed is 1782 m and the lowest is 1733 m and the interval between contours is 1 m.

Previous topographic studies revealed that the plannimetric area of Makera watershed is 447,840.1223 m2, and reservoir capacity of 9,703,452.75 m3 calculated above base height of 1733 m.
