Addressing Hygienic Issues in Schools through Awareness and Material Support

Access to clean water, Hygiene facilities and sanitation is among the core human rights for all. In many regions, clean water, Hygiene and Sanitation are critically in short supply which endangers the economy, public health, energy production, and food supply.

To bring support to Government of Rwanda’s commitment in addressing WASH sector specifically Hygiene subsector, SDHA has opted to use Promotion of Hygiene, sanitation and environmental health “SHC and CBEHPP” program.

The participatory approach is currently being used in schools as part of SDHA‘s software component which focuses on campaigns and awareness to embrace the culture of hygiene in public area such as schools.

In this line, SDHA School based campaigns on hygiene reached three primary schools namely Rutarabana, Ruli and Gitongati Primary schools.

Beyond the awareness, 79 pupils from vulnerable families were supported with school materials as ways of curbing drop outs due to lack of schools materials. 316 notebooks and 158 pens were distributed for the cause.

Three schools also received hygiene materials including 45 mops and 45 buckets to be used in cleaning classrooms and schools washrooms.

Also SDHA regularly assists the local Association of Christians volunteers of Murambi SDA Church who are committed to provide food to poor patients of Kabyayi Hospital, Muhanga District in Southern Province of Rwanda.

Beneficiaries of SDHA support includes admitted people from different districts in Rwanda and outside the country like Uganda, Burundi, DR Congo etc, for medical treatment whose financial means are not enough or don’t have relatives nearby.

The SDHA support consists of food and hygienic products like soaps to help patients to improve their health and hygiene and sanitation. The activity started 2016 and is organized twice a month. 100 to 150 beneficiaries are reached out through collaboration with the hospital management and Christian volunteering team under supervision of SDHA.
