SDHA at Africa Urban Forum in Nairobi to Advance Sustainable and Humanitarian Action Agenda

The Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Action participated in the second  Africa Forum on Sustainable Development  (AUF2)  happening in Nairobi, Kenya, from 8-10 April 2026.

The forum currently has convened policymakers, urban planners, civil society actors and development partners from across the continent to address the future of Africa’s rapidly growing cities. Among key participants is Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Action (SDHA), represented by Dr Jean Pierre Hakizimana, the Legal  Representative of the organisation.

The Africa Urban Forum (AUF) is a premier continental platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue on urbanisation and human settlements, established to harness rapid urbanisation as a catalyst for Africa’s transformation. The AUF was created following a resolution by the AU Assembly in Malabo in 2014, focusing on housing as a foundation for dignity and inclusion, a strategic economic driver, and a crucial asset for climate resilience.

The forum comes at a critical time as African cities face increasing pressure from population growth, climate change , and infrastructure deficits. Discussions are centred on building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban systems that can withstand both environmental and socioeconomic shocks.

Speaking on the sidelines of  the convening, Dr  Hakizimana said that “our interest as SDHA is clear: ensuring the community voice is heard in shaping sustainable, inclusive, and climate-responsive housing solutions”.

AUF’s establishment stems from the AU Assembly in Malabo in  2014. which created African Union Specialised Technical Committee  AU STC No.8, and the AU-STC No.8 Sub-Committee on Urban Development and Human Settlements (HUD) as the primary consultative body, succeeding the African ministerial conference on housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD).

The forum convened under the theme titled: “Adequate Housing for All: Advancing Socio-economic and Environmental Transformation towards the realization of Agenda 2063 is expected to close with adoption of the AUF2 Nairobi Declaration, which positions the Forum as a decisive continental milestone, transitioning from dialogue to implementation while setting the tone for Africa’s engagement at WUF13 and reinforcing the continent’s leadership in global urban and housing discourse.
